What is Urban Beat?
Urban Beat is an interactive installation featuring Dry EEG Headphones, a smartphone with the Urban Beat app, and a pocket printer, all crafted to showcase the inner workings of our cutting-edge technology.
Through our Urban Beat app, a one-minute song blends various sounds typical of major cities globally, each capable of eliciting distinct emotions. Integrated with our Dry EEG System Headphones, the app identifies and translates these emotions into animal representations, unveiling your personalized urban jungle spirit animal.
Explore the science behind
Emotions are measured and showcased during the composition on an "emotion wheel" coordinate system.
Our "emotion wheel" is based on Russell's Emotion Circumplex and contains a list of different animals associated with emotions characteristic to them: Annoyed Hornet, Bored Sloth, Excited Cheetah, Depressed Whale...
The emotion wheel describes and classifies emotions based on two main dimensions:
Valence: This dimension ranges from positive to negative emotions. Emotions with positive valence are those associated with pleasant experiences like joy, happiness, and contentment, while negative valence emotions are associated with unpleasant experiences.
Arousal: This dimension refers to an emotion’s level of activation or intensity. Low-arousal emotions are calm and tranquil, while high-arousal emotions are intense and stimulating.
Animals are linked to emotions, each with its own color according to Plutchik’s wheel of emotions, which builds on Russell’s model. Plutchik’s circumplex model connects the emotion circle and the color wheel.
